Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel‘s Legacy
Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, Sardar Patel rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected leaders of India’s freedom movement. Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he played a key role in movements like the Kheda Satyagraha and Bardoli Satyagraha, where he fought for farmers’ rights through non-violent methods. His leadership earned him the title ‘Sardar’, meaning leader.
After independence, Patel took on the challenging task of integrating hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union. Through diplomacy, firmness, and negotiation, he succeeded in bringing the entire country under one flag, earning his place in history as the Architect of Unified India.
Significance of National Unity Day
In 2014, the Government of India declared October 31 as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas to commemorate Sardar Patel’s efforts in strengthening India’s unity. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of togetherness in preserving the nation’s peace and diversity. Across India, people participate in events such as the Unity Pledge, parades, marathons, and cultural programs that promote the spirit of national integration.
Nationwide Celebrations
Schools, colleges, and government offices held special assemblies, exhibitions, and debates on Patel’s life and achievements. Citizens from different walks of life participated in the Run for Unity, symbolizing the collective strength and harmony of the nation.
A Vision That Lives On
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s vision of a united and strong India continues to guide the nation. On this National Unity Day, leaders and citizens alike pledged to uphold his ideals of unity, integrity, and patriotism.
“Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly,” Patel once said — a message that remains as relevant today as ever.
Happy National Unity Day!
