(File photo/PTI)BMC Mayor Reservation Lottery LIVE: The process of determining reservation for the post of Mayor of 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra is going to happen today i.e. on 22 January 2026. After the election results, now everyone’s eyes are fixed on this ‘Mayor Lottery’, because this draw will decide from which category the mayor will be elected in which municipal corporation.
The announcement of reservation is to be made in a few hours, due to which curiosity and excitement has intensified in the political circles. All eyes are on Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). BMC is the richest municipal corporation in the country, hence everyone’s eyes are on it. This time in BMC, Shiv Sena-Uddhav’s stronghold has been breached after years.
In the results of the recently held municipal elections, the BJP alliance has got majority in about 22 out of 29 municipal corporations of the state including Mumbai. In such a situation, it is considered certain that the BJP alliance will capture the post of Mayor in most of the corporations. However, the biggest discussion is about the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, where the reservation draw will decide which councilor will be able to participate in the race for the post of Mayor, because only the winning councilor coming from the category for which reservation will be declared will be eligible for the post of Mayor.
The reservation draw for the post of Mayor will be organized by the state government at 11 am on Thursday in the Council Auditorium located on the sixth floor of the Ministry. This process will be presided over by the Minister of State for Urban Development. The draw will be done in a completely transparent manner so that there is no scope for any kind of dispute.

What is rotation system?
The reservation process will be based on the cyclical system i.e. rotation system. This means that in the municipal corporations for which there was reservation last time, that category will be excluded this time and options will be kept for the remaining categories. Reservation categories will include Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC) and Open Class. Along with this, there will also be a provision for 50 percent women reservation.
As part of the draw process, slips of all reservation categories will be shown to everyone and put in a transparent box. After this, a slip will be drawn and on the basis of that, reservation for the post of Mayor of the concerned Municipal Corporation will be declared. This process will be done separately for 29 municipal corporations.
Suspense regarding BMC
There is a lot of suspense regarding reservation in Mumbai. If reservation for Scheduled Tribe (ST) category is declared for the post of Mayor here, then the political equation can change completely. At present, the candidates of Thackeray faction have won both the ST category seats in Mumbai, while BJP and Shinde faction do not have any councilor from this category. In such a situation, in case of ST reservation, the claim of Thackeray group on the post of Mayor will be strengthened.
The mayor reservation draw will not only decide the leadership structure of 29 municipal corporations, but will also influence the direction and equations of urban politics in the times to come. Therefore, from political parties to the general public, everyone’s eyes are fixed on this important process.
