Former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Passes Away at 90
Shivraj Patil, who previously served as the Union Home Minister and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, has passed away at the age of 90. The veteran Congress leader had been unwell for some time and breathed his last at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra. He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, and two granddaughters.
A Senior Leader With a Long Political Journey
Shivraj Patil served as the Union Home Minister between 2004 and 2008 during the UPA government led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. He held the position during one of India’s most tragic events — the Mumbai terrorist attacks on November 26, 2008. Following the incident, he resigned from the post.
Earlier in his career, Patil served as the Speaker of the 10th Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996, where he earned recognition for his composed and disciplined leadership.
Roles Beyond Parliament
After his tenure in the central government, Shivraj Patil continued to serve in significant administrative positions.
From 2010 to 2015, he was appointed as the Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
