Japan earthquake live: A megaquake warning has been issued for an 800-mile stretch of coast, and the prime minister is telling people to be ready.

The warning goes from Chiba to Hokkaido, which is about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers).

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued its highest-level warning that a megaquake could happen after the 7.5-magnitude tremor on Monday.

Officials told people living near the Pacific coast to stay alert all week and make plans to leave their homes if they need to.

The warning covers about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers), from Chiba, Japan, on the northeastern coast, to Hokkaido.

Sanae Takaichi, the prime minister, told people to get ready by saying, “Please take the right steps to protect yourself from disasters, because you are responsible for your own life.”

At least 34 people were hurt in the earthquake on Monday night, and tsunami warnings were issued for a wide area. Waves of up to 70 cm were reported in several coastal communities.

All warnings were lifted later, and nuclear power plants in northeastern Japan did emergency inspections as a safety measure.

The earthquake happened in the Pacific Ocean at about 11:15 PM, about 50 miles off the coast of Aomori.

Since the warning system went live in 2022, this is the first time a top-tier alert has been sent out.

Officials have told people to pack an emergency bag, lock up their furniture, sleep in clothes during the day instead of pajamas, and make sure their family members know what to do in case of an emergency.

How likely is it that a megaquake will happen?
Megaquakes are always unpredictable and can hit any part of Japan without warning.

The Japanese weather agency, on the other hand, says that they are sometimes preceded by a “somewhat smaller” earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or higher.

In the past, two big earthquakes happened one to two days after these kinds of events.

For instance, the Great East Japan Earthquake, which had a magnitude of 9.0, happened two days after a magnitude-7.3 quake off the coast of Sanriku in 2011.

In the same way, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 southeast of Etorofu Island in 1963 was followed by an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5 18 hours later.

The agency has said that, based on global earthquake statistics, the chance of a major quake happening after such an advisory is only about one percent, or about once every 100 advisories.

How long will Japan be on high alert for megaquakes?
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) sent out its first special warning for possible follow-up earthquakes and tsunamis in the Hokkaido and Sanriku coastal areas after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture on Monday.

Local news reports say that the government wants people to stay on alert for about a week.

The chance of more earthquakes and tsunamis happening is highest right after the first big one and gets lower over time.

After a 7.5 magnitude earthquake off northern Japan on December 9, 2025, a torii gate at the entrance to Yasaka Shrine fell onto a sidewalk in Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture.

The Japan Times said that the one-week period is not based on exact scientific data, but it is a good time to be extra careful.

Officials have said that daily life doesn’t need to stop, but residents should double-check their usual earthquake preparations during this time.

The official name of the advisory is “Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory.”

Japan sends out a warning about a megaquake
The Japan Meteorological Agency says that the strong earthquake on Monday raised the risk of more problems in Hokkaido and along the Sanriku coast for a short time.

The Japan Trench and Chishima Trench are two trenches that the Pacific Plate makes under Japan. They have caused a lot of big earthquakes in the past.

Experts say that the Japan Trench’s movement caused the deadly earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The Chishima Trench runs from the eastern coast of Hokkaido to the northern islands and the Kurils. It goes from the eastern coast of Chiba to Aomori.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that the 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, which destroyed large parts of Japan’s northern coast, happened two days after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake at the Japan Trench off the eastern coast of Iwate, which was one of the hardest-hit areas in both disasters.

The earthquake in 2011 caused a tsunami that hit towns on the northern coast of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures.

The tsunami, which was more than 15 meters (50 feet) high in some places, hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and destroyed it. That made people very afraid of radiation, and that fear still exists today.

A general view shows the scene of a fire that broke out in Aomori City on Tuesday after an earthquake.

At least 10 people were hurt, but there didn’t seem to be any major damage after a big earthquake shook northern Japan and sent tsunami waves up to 70 centimeters high.
