New Delhi: It was really shocking for a veteran artist like AR Rahman to call Hindi cinema ‘communal’, especially when he has worked in the same industry for decades. The reaction of artists like Manoj Tiwari and Shaan indicates that there is a lot of disagreement within the industry regarding his statement.
AR Rahman described Hindi cinema as ‘communal’, which sparked controversy. According to media reports, Manoj Tiwari expressed surprise and said that he disagrees with AR Rahman’s statement. He believes that success and failure are a matter of time and it is wrong to link it with communalism. Sometimes everything slows down. He described A R Rahman’s statement as beyond comprehension. Singer Shaan clearly said that there is no communalism in the music industry. Not getting work could be due to personal or professional reasons, which he himself has experienced.

AR Rahman had to give clarification
A R Rahman clarified his statement after a lot of opposition. He released the video and said that India is his inspiration and his intention was not to hurt anyone’s sentiments. The composer is famous for his work for Tamil and Hindi films. He has also done some work in global cinema. He has won dozens of awards including six National Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, one BAFTA Award, one Golden Globe Award. In 2010, the Government of India honored him with the country’s third highest civilian award ‘Padma Bhushan’.
Music threaded with talent
AR Rahman started his career as a film composer in the early 1990s with the Tamil film ‘Roja’. He composed music for many Tamil films including Mani Ratnam’s film ‘Bombay’, ‘Kadhalan’, ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ and S Shankar’s debut film ‘Gentleman’. He received the BMI Award for Best Score for A R Rahman’s first Hollywood project ‘Couples Retreat’. His music for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ received the Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Jai Ho) awards at the 81st Academy Awards. He also received awards for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
