OpenAI has started rolling out a new Age Prediction feature for ChatGPT. The purpose of this feature is to provide a safe and age-appropriate experience to users under 18 years of age on the platform.
According to the company, this feature is being implemented at the global level, while in the European Union (EU) it will be launched in the coming weeks keeping in mind the regional rules.
What is the Age Prediction feature in ChatGPT?
Age Prediction is a new feature of ChatGPT, through which it is predicted whether a user is under 18 years of age or not. If the system detects that the account may belong to a minor, the platform automatically turns on additional security settings to provide users with an age-appropriate experience.

Why has OpenAI started this feature?
OpenAI says that the safety of teenage users on ChatGPT is extremely important. The Age Prediction feature is intended to protect minor users from sensitive, risky, or harmful content and provide them with a safe, age-appropriate experience.
How does the Age Prediction System work?
This system does not depend on any one information. ChatGPT looks at a number of account-related signals, such as the topics users talk about, conversation patterns, and when ChatGPT is used. Age is estimated on the basis of these signs.
What happens if the system makes a wrong guess?
OpenAI recognizes that no system is completely perfect. If a user above 18 years of age accidentally goes into under-18 mode, they can verify their age and remove additional safety settings.

How does ChatGPT change in Under-18 mode?
If ChatGPT believes the user is under 18, some topics are shown more carefully. This includes content that promotes graphic violence, dangerous viral challenges, sexual or violent role-play, and unhealthy body standards. However, education, information and creative work continues.
How can age be verified?
Users aged 18 years or older can verify their age by logging into ChatGPT’s website and going to Settings > Account > Verify Age option. For this, OpenAI takes the help of a third-party company Persona.
What does one have to pay for age verification?
Depending on the country’s regulations, Persona may ask users for a live selfie or a government ID (such as a passport, driver’s license, or state ID). With this the age is confirmed.
Does this affect user privacy?
According to OpenAI, user privacy is completely protected. Persona deletes the selfie or ID within 7 days after verification. OpenAI does not receive these documents, but only receives age verification.
