ChatGPT, which has been away from advertisements till now, is soon going to undergo a major change. OpenAI has confirmed that it will begin testing ads on ChatGPT in the coming weeks.
This will be the first time that advertisements will appear in this AI chatbot. Initially this test will be only for US users, and if everything goes well then later it can be implemented in other countries also.
According to OpenAI, currently advertisements will be shown only on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Whereas paid plans like Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Business will remain completely ad-free. This means that there will be no change in the experience of the users who take subscription.

Label will be visible separately
The company has also made it clear that advertisements will not have any impact on the responses of ChatGPT. The answers that AI will provide will be completely independent and will not be influenced by any advertising company. Ads will appear separately from chat responses and will be clearly labeled as ‘Ad’ or ‘Sponsored’ so users can easily differentiate.
OpenAI has also given assurance regarding data. The company says that user chats or conversations will not be shared with advertisers. Only limited and non-conversational data may be used for ads. Apart from this, users will also get the control to turn off personalized ads and clear data related to ad targeting.

Social media will not work
OpenAI has also said that it does not want to make ChatGPT like social media. This means that the answers will not be changed to keep the user in the app for a long time. The focus will always be on giving correct and useful answers to the questions.
Talking about the format of advertisements, OpenAI says that they will be informative and mixed in experience. In some cases, users will be able to explore a product or service within ChatGPT after clicking on an ad, without having to go to an external website.
Since this is still in the testing phase, it is possible that the number of ads, format and which users will be visible may change in the future.
