A feature may soon come on Instagram, which will make our ‘social boundaries’ on social media a little clearer and easier. Actually, Meta is working on a new option, under which users will be able to remove themselves from someone else’s Close Friends list. Till now, if someone added you to their Close Friends list, you had no direct way to leave it.
Instagram’s Close Friends feature came in the year 2018. Its purpose was that people could share their story, reel or post only with selected people and not with all the followers. Gradually this feature became a sign of ‘special people’.

But from here a strange situation also started developing. Many times people are added to the Close Friends list where they themselves do not feel comfortable, such as office colleagues, distant acquaintances or old contacts.
According to the report of TechCrunch, Instagram is now working on a tool through which any user will be able to be removed from someone’s Close Friends list not silently but clearly. An early version of this feature was seen by famous tipster Alessandro Paluzzi in the app’s code.

It also displays a warning stating that if you leave the list, that person’s Close Friends content will be visible to you again only if they add you again.
This change may seem small, but its impact can be big. On the one hand, this feature may seem strange or offensive to some people, because Close Friends are often associated with trust or close relationships. On the other hand, there are many users who would welcome this control. After all, not everyone is ready for all types of ‘digital closeness’.

This feature is already available in Snapchat
Interestingly, platforms like Snapchat already give users the option to remove themselves from a private story. In such a situation, Instagram’s lagging behind till now was beginning to seem a bit old.
At present, Meta has clarified that this feature is still in the initial stage and public testing has not started. That means it may or may not come. But it is certain that Instagram is now in the mood to do new experiments regarding user control and privacy.
In the coming times, the decision on how much to stay connected with whom on social media will probably be more in the hands of the users.
