1. Lord Rama’s Return to Ayodhya
The most famous story of Diwali is from the Ramayana. It is believed that when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, after completing 14 years of exile, the people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps throughout the city to welcome him back. This is why we light lamps on Diwali – it symbolizes that good always triumphs over evil.
2. The Birth of Goddess Lakshmi
Another story says that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, emerged from the Kshir Sagar (the ocean of milk) during a great event called Samudra Manthan. People believe that on the night of Diwali, she visits homes that are clean, bright, and filled with devotion. Therefore, everyone decorates their homes and worships Lakshmi for good fortune and prosperity. This is considered a special day of Diwali, which we celebrate as Lakshmi Pujan.
3. Lord Krishna Kills Narakasura
In South India, Diwali is associated with Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, who had caused great suffering to the people. Lord Krishna fought and defeated him, freeing all those held captive. This day is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, symbolizing that light and truth always triumph over darkness.
4. Return of the Pandavas
According to the Mahabharata, it was on Diwali that the Pandavas returned to their kingdom after 13 years of exile. People welcomed them with lighting lamps and celebrations. This is another story of joy, hope, and reunion.
5. Goddess Kali’s Victory Over Evil
In West Bengal and eastern India, people celebrate Kali Puja on the night of Diwali. It is believed that Goddess Kali destroyed all evil forces to protect the world. Her story reminds us to remove negativity from our lives and fill them with goodness.
